Prince Harry is stepping down from the board of African Parks.
The announcement comes nearly a decade after he first partnered with the non-profit conservation organization in 2016.
African Parks “takes on direct responsibility for the rehabilitation and long-term management of protected areas in partnership with governments and local communities,” per the official website.
What Prince Harry’s Spokesperson Said
A spokesperson for the 41-year-old royal provided a statement.
“The Duke is proud of his 10 years with African Parks and fully supports the ongoing strengthening of its board. His commitment to conservation in Africa continues, and he remains a supporter of African Parks’ mission,” the spokesperson said, via Us Weekly.
African Parks Thanks Prince Harry for His Service
“Following a ten-year association with African Parks, Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, will conclude his tenure on the Board of Directors. His relationship with the organisation dates back to Malawi in July 2016, when he supported one of the largest elephant translocations in history. He served as President for six years before being appointed a member of the Board of Directors. Over the years, The Duke has brought global attention to the urgent need for biodiversity protection for the benefit of people and wildlife, and has contributed greatly to promoting philanthropy for the cause of conservation in Africa. The Duke remains deeply committed to this cause, and remains a strong supporter of African Parks’ work,” the charity said in their own statement.
“We extend our thanks to all the members of the Board who generously volunteer their time in support of our conservation mission – and particularly to The Duke of Sussex, for a decade of committed service to African Parks.”
Why Is Prince Harry Leaving the African Parks Board?
The charity’s governance code says “trustees are usually expected to serve for a term of no more than three years, and may be reappointed for further terms, up to a maximum of nine years,” per Us.
Harry reportedly stayed on a few extra months to ensure transition with a replacement trustee.
The news comes as it was revealed that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are moving back to the UK.
