Celine Dion makes her triumphant return to the stage as she kicks off her Paris residency, following years of battling Stiff Person Syndrome.
Celine Dion made her much-anticipated return to the stage to kick off her Paris residency, following years away from touring and active performance after her diagnosis with Stiff Person Syndrome. The 58-year-old singer was emotional as she made her entrance to a crowd of approximately 30,000 adoring fans at the La Plenitude Arena.
It’s a major turning point for the legendary artist, who was forced to cancel the remainder of her Courage world tour in 2023 due to her battle with a rare neurological disorder that causes severe muscle stiffness and painful spasms. Stiff Person Syndrome can also lead to an unsteady walk, double vision, or slurred speech. While there is no cure for Stiff Person Syndrome, treatment can help manage its symptoms and slow the progression of the disease.
Celine Dion has performed only twice since announcing her diagnosis. However, over the weekend, she fulfilled her own dreams by returning to the stage in remarkable form after months of intense training.
“I had promised myself not to cry. I don’t keep my promises,” she told the crowd. “It’s amazing we are all together. I made a promise to come back, to be back on stage. So here I am, singing for you and singing for me, singing live.”
“Thank you so very much for your support [and] your patience, and if I may say so, I am everything I am because you loved me,” Celine added.
To ensure she would be physically able to perform, the singer has been working on her strength with 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week in addition to twice-weekly ballet and barre classes. She has a fully equipped home gym that includes weights, a treadmill, and a reformer machine. Dion said that her flexibility has increased significantly since she started her exercise regime.
The Paris residency includes 16 shows in the fall of 2026 and 10 additional dates in May 2027. Celine announced the planned comeback in March, and tickets sold out almost instantly.
