EXCLUSIVE: Mt. Mystic, the comedy series based on a YouTube pilot, has added Johnny Knoxville to its cast.
It comes as Knoxville’s Jackass: Best and Last, the final movie in the franchise’s film franchise, was released last month.
Knoxville, who also hosts Fox’s Fear Factor: House of Fear, which is heading into its second season, has joined the ensemble and will also exec produce.
The mockumentary comedy show follows a dysfunctional team of park rangers as they face budget cuts, drama, and chaos — both natural and supernatural — in the most unpredictable state park on Earth. Each episode follows the rangers’ personal misadventures and existential distractions as they try, and mostly fail, to maintain order in the strangest place in the world: Mt. Mystic State Park.
Knoxville plays Lieutenant Gibbard, a newly installed lieutenant who is eager and deeply unprepared for the sheer volume of personalities around him. Gibbard spent two decades in solitude working for the Forest Service and now finds human interaction overwhelming.
It comes from Jeremiah Dunlap and Cory Quintard, who created and star in the six-part series, and are joined by Beta Angarole, Josh Black, Tenea Intriago, Mindy Lopez, Robyn Quintard, Moiba Mustapha, Sally Harvey Anderson and Jasper Platt
The series also has put together a starry guest cast including Joel Kim Booster, Michaela Watkins, Al Madrigal, Josh Radnor, Will Hines, Brian Huskey, Hannah Pilkes and Allan McLeod.
Mt. Mystic is produced by Amplify Pictures, which is behind HBO’s 100 Foot Wave and was founded by Amazon Studios’ former head of comedy and drama Joe Lewis. Stay Tuned, the company founded by screenwriter Kenny Neibart, exec producer Douglas Banker and former CAA agent Barry Kotler, has come on board to co-finance the series.
It is directed by Dunlap with production set to start this summer in LA.
Lewis exec produces alongside Rachel Eggebeen, Colin King Miller and Luke Esselen for Amplify Pictures and Dunlap, Quintard and Andrew Secunda for Foundry Mass and Neibart, Banker and Kotler for Stay Tuned.
It is the latest project between Amplify Pictures and Knoxville after Pretty Sure I Can Fly, the podcast hosted by Knoxville and Elna Baker.
