Melissa McCarthy has not often spoken about Gilmore Girls in interviews, but she was asked about her starring role in the fan favorite series.
If you are not aware, the TV show ran for seven seasons, beginning in 2000. It starred Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel as mother-daughter duo Lorelai and Rory. Melissa starred as Lorelai’s best friend, chef Sookie St. James.
She was asked about her experience working on the show in a new interview with Variety.
Melissa remarked, “It was hard! It was really hard. But to me, that was normal, because it was my first show. So I was like, ‘Oh, our scripts are 93 pages, and you can’t change a contraction, even if you get them that morning and it’s a 10-page oner.’ [Editor’s note: a “oner” is a single, continuous camera shot.] And that’s just what it was.”
Melissa continued, “I love that she [Amy Sherman-Palladino] had her own style, and I love that she built that world. I love that she fought for it, because a woman running that show at that time, I think you kind of had to be like, ‘It’s my way or the highway.’ I think she had to probably fight to keep it the way she wanted to. And I’m glad she did, because it stood the test of time. People really take ownership of that show.”
By the way, Melissa did return for the Netflix revival, Gilmore Girls: A Day in the Life, which was released in 2016, for a brief cameo.
