Instagram now lets users swap out the music on their published posts and carousels without having to delete the post and re-upload it.

On Tuesday, Instagram announced a new feature enabling users to swap out the music on their published posts and carousels. Previously, the only way to change the music on a post was by deleting it and re-uploading it.

The “Replace Audio” tool makes it easy for users to update the music on their posts at any time while maintaining the post’s existing likes, comments, shares, and overall reach. It’s a feature that has been a long time coming for the Meta-owned platform, which previously forced creators and brands to choose between keeping a post’s existing engagement and updating its soundtrack—especially problematic if a post has been flagged for copyright infringement.

To use the new feature, navigate to the post you want to update, tap the two-line menu in the top-right corner of the post, and scroll down to “Edit.” From there, you’ll see the option to swap out the audio.

It’s worth noting that YouTube also includes such a feature, making it easy for creators to swap out the music in their videos and Shorts without having to remove and re-upload the existing content. As many creators find their livelihood on YouTube, Instagram, or both, the addition of an audio swap feature on Instagram is a welcome change.

The timing couldn’t be better for Instagram, which recently came under fire for a feature that allowed users to modify photos from public Instagram accounts using AI. The feature was so ill-received that the company nixed it altogether less than a week later.

In another incident, the company released a feature in May called “Instants,” which Instagram described as a new format to share real-life moments as they were happening. However, many users didn’t fully understand the feature and accidentally sent images to everyone on their friends list, leading to a lot of frustration.
