Move over, Cheech and Chong. Make room, Jay and Silent Bob. Don’t bogart the good stuff, Harold and Kumar. There’s a new duo in the blunt rotation, with Frankie (Kristen Stewart) and Molly (Alia Shawkat) in The Wrong Girls.
Written and directed by Stewart’s wife Dylan Meyer, the stoner comedy is inspired by one of Meyer’s own friendships, exploring the highs and lows of two baked besties’ codependent friendship through a new drug that allows them to read minds and communicate telepathically, all while trying to come up with a way to pay rent.
Stewart stars as Frankie, a Stanford engineering dropout who has let life pass her by, while Shawkat plays Molly, a culinary cannabis artist that is the only person who understands her. They can even communicate in coughs while ripping their trusty giant “bongatron,” before they even stumble upon their new powerful psychedelics.
The friendship is real between the pair—who previously appeared together in 2010’s The Runaways—portraying an organic camaraderie that feels lived-in with their unique comedic chemistry, as well as their emotional connection that plays into a pivotal dramatic scene.
Filled with all the hallmarks of a good caper, including mistaken identities, government spies and mind-altering drugs, The Wrong Girls manages to colorfully capture the weed culture of Los Angeles—in a movie actually filmed in LA—while introducing a cast of characters that is primed for a sequel (Frankie & Molly’s Up in Smoke, perhaps?).
With an ensemble including LaKeith Stanfield, Kate McKinnon, Geena Davis, Tony Hale, Seth Rogen and Kumail Nanjiani, Stewart and Shawkat are in good company, performing their bong-ripping Abbott & Costello opposite many a talented “straight man.”
Meanwhile, Rogen and Nanjiani manage to steal multiple scenes as the voices of the ladies’ cats Dio and GG, two sarcastic felines who are fed up with their burnout owners.
Led by Meyer’s colorful pop take on Angeleno weed culture, the movie has its own signature stylized whimsy, evident through the aforementioned “bongatron” and a Celine Dion cardboard cutout, courtesy of production designer Katie Hickman, as well as wardrobe like a busty Elvira t-shirt and some trash-bag couture, provided by costume designer Heidi Bivens.
Given the stoner comedy genre’s unfortunate lack of female representation, The Wrong Girls is a breath of dank kush, perfect to watch after hot-boxing with your bestie in The Grove parking garage. With a trio like Stewart, Shawkat and Meyer in charge of this potential franchise, let’s hope a sequel isn’t just a pipe dream.
