Joey Chestnut, who in the immortal words of ESPN sports reporter Jeremy Schaap is “the greatest eater in the annals of eating, in the annals of humankind, and food,” won his 18th title today at the annual July 4th Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island, New York.
Chestnut scarfed down 66 dogs, 10 shy of his all-time best set in 2021 but plenty enough to beat out today’s #2: Pat Bertoletti, who at 51 in the 10-minute contest aired live on ESPN (watch it below).
Interviewed following his win on ESPN, the 42-year-old Chestnut dismissed, more or less, the impact of today’s 92 degree New York heat on the proceedings. “I’m not going to go into it, looking for excuses,” Chestnut said, “but it slowed me down.” Chestnut said he “knew early” he wasn’t going to be able to top his 76-weiner best, but knew he “just had to stay calm, don’t push things and don’t make any big mistakes.”
In the women’s division, favorite Miki Sudo retained her mustard belt – her 12th, and fifth consecutive – by consuming 38.75 hot dogs.
