You’re about to see Channing Tatum like you have never seen him before.

That’s because in Josephine, he tapped into his experience as dad to 13-year-old daughter Everly, according to costar Gemma Chan.

“If you only know him from things like Magic Mike or 21 Jump Street you will be in for a whole new side of Channing Tatum,” Chan told E! News at the premiere of Josephine during the Toronto International Film Festival.  “He’s got such emotional availability. He’s got a daughter as well so I feel that he brought so much of his own experience to this role and he’s amazing.”

In fact, critics have lauded Tatum’s performance in Josephine—which follows a married couple navigating the aftermath of their young daughter witnessing a horrible crime—as one of his best. Chan feels the praise is more than deserved: “I’m not surprised by it because I know he’s such a fantastic actor.”

He’s not the only must-see, either as Chan was just as floored by rising star Mason Reeves’ performance. (The film's director Beth de Araújo discovered Reeves, 9, at a farmers market.)

“She’s so talented,” Chan raved. “She’s so wise beyond her years and also a regular fun-loving kid. The film wouldn’t have worked if we hadn’t found her so I’m so happy.”

And Chan is also simply happy the movie is finally ready to be seen by audiences.

“This film is truly a small miracle that it got made,” Chan continued. “I first was sent the script back in 2019 so it’s been a bit of a journey and now that we get to share it with people it’s a special moment and I feel really happy, really proud.”

As for what she thinks of the potential Oscar buzz already generating for 2026? “One step at a time for sure,” the Crazy Rich Asians actress said. “If people are responding to it and enjoying it then that’s a bonus and who knows."
