EXCLUSIVE: Netflix has nabbed another high-profile project, Jupiter Island, with a straight-to-series order. The golf drama comes from newly minted Emmy nominee Connor Hines, creator/executive producer of FX’s Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, and A24. In conjunction with the Jupiter Island pickup, Netflix has signed an overall deal with Hines to exclusively develop new series for the global streamer.

Written by Hines, who will serve as showrunner, Jupiter Island is said to be loosely inspired by real-life events and celebrities in the world of the PGA.

The series is set on the ultra-exclusive Jupiter Island where the privileged world of professional golfers and their wives fractures when a mysterious outsider arrives — and a secret threatens golf’s reigning power couple.

Hines executive produces with Julie Gardner of Bad Wolf America.

The pickup gives Netflix two professional golf scripted series; the streamer also has the Will Ferrell comedy The Hawk premiering July 16. They are joining Netflix’s popular golf docuseries Full Swing.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Connor Hines to Netflix,” Netflix’s Head of UCAN Scripted Series Jinny Howe said. “Connor has a rare gift for rich, character-driven storytelling that shines through again in Jupiter Island, reflecting our commitment to delivering premium television to engage our audiences. His recent Emmy nominations are proof he’s just getting started — and we’re excited for everything that comes next.”

As revealed yesterday, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, created and executive produced by Hines, has been nominated for 7 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series which Hines is part of as an executive producer.

Hines wrote five and co-wrote a sixth of Love Story‘s nine episodes. The series, about JFK Jr.’s tragic fairytale romance with Calvin Klein executive Bessette, was FX’s most watched limited series ever on Hulu and Disney+ and grew week over week.

Netflix had a strong showing at the Emmy nominations yesterday with 111 noms across 34 titles, led by Beef Season 2 (16) and The Beast In Me (9), which both will compete with Love Story in the Limited or Anthology Series categories.

“I’m thrilled to be partnering with Netflix, A24, and Bad Wolf’s Julie Gardner,” Hines said. “I’ve been living with the world of Jupiter Island for quite some time, and I’m so excited and lucky to bring it to life with such amazing collaborators.”

A24 is the studio on the project. The independent company is behind Beef as well as two other upcoming straight-to-series Netflix projects: Trigger Point starring Joe Edgerton and a spy drama starring Millie Bobby Brown and David Harbour.

This makes a homecoming for Hines who began his writing career on the Netflix comedy Space Force, created by Steve Carell and Greg Daniels. He recently served as a writer on the upcoming Apple TV limited series Wild Things starring Jude Law and Andrew Garfield. Hines is repped by UTA, Rise Management and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.
