Teddy Swims has dropped his new song “Perfect Man” and he’s opening about the very personal meaning behind the single.

The song will be featured on Teddy‘s upcoming second album, Ugly, which is going to be released on January 22. The song is “about the impossible standards we set for ourselves and learning to find strength in our imperfections.”

Teddy appears to be singing about regrets from his breakup with ex-girlfriend Raiche Wright, who is the mother of his child.

Teddy sings, “She didn’t ask for the world, just for more of me / I think she said something else, I wasn’t listening / She’s the perfect woman, everyone would agree / She deserves someone I know I can never be.”

“There’s no such thing as a perfect man / I looked her in the eyes and lied, said I was doing the best I can / And that I’m never gonna be a perfect man / ‘Cause there’s no such thing as a perfect man,” he sings in the chorus.

Teddy released a statement to explain the song.

“‘Perfect Man’ is a song about self forgiveness. In my life, I’ve held myself to a standard that is completely unrealistic, I’ve been too hard on myself as a partner, as a father, and in feeling the responsibility that comes with knowing there are people who rely and look up to me. I truly believe our insecurities and our quirks are signs of strength rather than weakness. My hope with this song, and with the work and conversations around it, is that people can find some relief and try to lean into our shortcomings and have an open dialogue about them rather than trying to hide them,” Teddy said. “The beauty of chasing perfection is knowing we will never reach it.”

Listen to Teddy‘s other new song, “Break Up in Reverse.”
