Oscar winner Michael Giacchino has been officially unveiled as the composer for Brad Bird’s upcoming Netflix animation “Ray Gunn.”

“Ray Gunn,” an original futuristic detective caper, is set to be the duo’s sixth collaboration since they first teamed up on 2004 Pixar animation “The Incredibles.” (They have since worked together on “Ratatouille,” “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” “Tomorrowland” and “Incredibles 2.”)

The score was recently recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London.

Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson and Tom Waits are lending their voices to the Skydance Animation, which is set in a gigantic city called Metropia in an alternate future as seen from 1939. Rockwell voices private eye Raymond Gunn, who is drawn into a case involving “aliens, murder and a multimedia star named Venus Nova,” according to the logline. Johansson is set to voice Nova.

“One of the reasons I loved working with Michael again on ‘Ray Gunn’ is that he treats the orchestra like a living organism,” Bird said. “He wants all the musicians in the same room, reacting to each other, and you can hear the difference. It’s the same way I like to work with animators — they’re not an afterthought, they are the thought.”

Giacchino added: “Working with Brad on ‘Ray Gunn’ still feels like two kids meeting in a park to talk about ‘Jonny Quest.’ We grew up loving the same things, we still get that same excitement, and that shared enthusiasm gets poured straight into the movies we make together.”

“Ray Gunn” is Bird’s first feature since “The Incredibles 2,” which came out in 2018. He conceived the original story and co-wrote the screenplay with Matthew Robbins.

Although the exact release date hasn’t yet been confirmed, “Ray Gunn” is set to arrive on Netflix later this year.

Skydance Animation struck an exclusive multi-year deal with Netflix in 2023 for its animated features. They recently launched “Swapped,” which was released last month and featured the voices of Michael B. Jordan, Juno Temple, Tracy Morgan, Cedric the Entertainer and Justina Machado.
