The 2026 Toronto International Film Festival has begun and there were so many major premieres at the festival on Thursday, September 10. Let’s recap all of them in one place!
Jodie Comer, Dylan O’Brien, Josh Hartnett, Naomi Watts, Sebastian Stan, and more stars were on the red carpet in Toronto for the premieres of their films.
TIFF is often the launchpad for awards season movies, so we’re going to have a better idea of Oscars frontrunners once this festival wraps up.
Stuffed, starring Jodie Comer and Harry Melling
TIFF describes the movie as “a dark comedy, an offbeat romance, and a twisted musical that dances between the macabre and the heartfelt. At its centre are Araminta, an isolated mortician-cum-taxidermist with a dream, and Bernie, a lonely factory worker whose extraordinary request draws these two outsiders together.”

River, starring Jane Levy and Jessica Rothe
Jane Levy, Jessica Rothe, Max Mattern, and Dane DiLiegro walked the red carpet together for their premiere on Thursday night.
Having convened to scatter the ashes of their late father from a family motorboat, embittered sisters (Levy and Rothe), and their younger brother (Mattern) stall out beneath a derelict bridge along a rural waterway. Familial wounds are provoked, and fingers are pointed, first at each other, but soon at the sudden appearance of a strange man (DiLiegro) eerily staring from the shoreline. Tall and statuesque, the figure’s face is seemingly without features or emotion, just a palpable, anonymous malevolence. And when he stops merely staring, the family must come together and start surviving.
Being Heumann, starring Dylan O’Brien
TIFF reports that Being Heumann tells the remarkable true story of the woman who led a world-changing campaign for accessibility. Judy Heumann rallied a handful, then dozens, then hundreds of ordinary Americans with disabilities to push the US government to live up to its commitments.

Fjord, starring Sebastian Stan

A Norwegian woman and her devout Romanian husband relocate with their five children to a remote, close-knit, coastal town. Their teenage children form a fast bond with a neighboring family as unease begins to simmer around their rigid beliefs. When allegations of abuse emerge, they are forced to confront a system of judgment that blurs the line between concern and prejudice.
The movie, also starring Renate Reinsve, will be released in theaters on October 9.

Josh Hartnett debuted his new limited series Below during the festival.
Calvin Penney (Hartnett) is a big?hearted but stubborn fisherman living in a small Newfoundland town, who’s still haunted by his father’s mysterious death from decades ago. When an unidentified sea creature begins terrorizing his hometown, Calvin must fight to hold his close-knit community together. Determined to keep his son Wade (Charlie Heaton) and the rest of his family safe, he teams up with a visiting marine researcher (Mackenzie Davis) to confront the creature and reveal the island’s buried secrets before it’s too late. Blending local myth, thrilling suspense, and heartfelt humor, this twisty six-part limited series dives into themes of family, community, and change – both terrifying and inevitable.
Also in attendance at the event were co-stars Mackenzie Davis, Ruby Stokes, Charlie Heaton, Rohan Campbell, and Natasha Henstridge.

The series debuts on Netflix on October 8.
Rapinoe, starring Megan Rapinoe
Soccer star Megan Rapinoe was at the festival to premiere her new documentary. Check out TIFF‘s synopsis below.

The Housewife, starring Naomi Watts
Naomi Watts was joined by co-stars Luke Evans, Tye Sheridan, and Michael Imperioli for the premiere of their new movie.
The year is 1964. A very proper Hermine (Watts) and her hardworking husband Russel (Evans) enjoy a seemingly normal life in New York City — until the fateful day Hermine meets The New York Times journalist Joseph Lelyveld (Sheridan). Following a tip from a Holocaust survivor, Joseph is investigating the possibility that Russel might be a Nazi in hiding. As his inquiry deepens — and his exchanges with Hermine become increasingly intimate — Joseph discovers a series of revelations far stranger and more complicated than he could have imagined.
