EXCLUSIVE: Charades has posted a raft of deals for Canadian director Leah Nelson’s feature animation Tangles ahead of its North American premiere in Toronto.
In Europe, it has been acquired for Benelux (September Film Distribution), France Nour Films, Greece (Cinobo), Italy (I Wonder Pictures), UK (Altitude Film Entertainment), Spain (Filmin, Elastica), Germany and Austria (PIFFL), Hungary (Mozinet Ltd) and Poland ( Cinobo), while Aardwolf has taken rights for Airlines.
Further sales include to Israel (Lev Cinema), Latin America (Synapse), Australia and New Zealand (Umbrella Entertainment), India (Pictureworks), South Korea (Challen) and Taiwan (Swallow Wings).
As previously announced at the end of August, Independent Film Company (IFC) has taken North American rights and is planning an Oscar-winning theatrical run.
The film is adapted from Sarah Leavitt’s graphic memoir Tangles: A Story About Alzheimer’s, My Mother and Me, retelling her experiences after her feisty, beloved mother developed Alzheimer’s.
It follows her family’s bewilderment as the mother’s personality inexplicably begins to change ahead of a diagnosis. Sarah then puts her life as an activist and artist in 1990s San Francisco on hold to return to her small hometown to spend time with mother as her mind fragments.
The film – featuring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Seth Rogen, Abbi Jacobson and Samira Wiley in voice cast, enjoyed a buzzy world premiere as a Special Screening in Cannes, and also went on to play in Annecy.
It is produced by Vicky Patel, Steve Barnett and Alan Powell of Monarch Media; Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee and Madeline Blair of Point Grey Pictures; Ross Murray, Teresa Toews through director Nelson and Jay Grandin’s Giant Ant Films; Lauren Miller Rogen, Jen Ray and Sophie Hoegh through LYLAS Pictures; and Louis-Dreyfus.
Charades is handing international sales, with CAA Media Finance, and they are co-repping North American and Global sales.
