EXCLUSIVE: Former DreamWorks and MGM TV exec Brian Edwards has joined Alpha Film & Television founders Jon Hamm and Zack Sherman and finance investor Jaan Bains to launch a new global financing outfit dubbed Time Zone Capital.

The company, which is based in New York and London, will look to provide institutional capital and media and finance expertise to premium indie film and television projects in the $5-$15M range.

With a focus on English-language projects, the platform will provide flexible, structured capital to projects and production companies “with strong creative, commercial and distribution fundamentals.”

The company has said it will look to finance production, distribution and eventually MGs, P&A, tax credit facilities, presale advances, gap financing and remaining rights structures. Total value of the fund was not disclosed.

Edwards is the former COO and General Counsel of Dreamworks and former President of MGM Global Television Operations. Jon Hamm and Zack Sherman are the founders of Alpha Film & Television, whose recent projects include upcoming TIFF title Prima Facie starring Cynthia Erivo, Netflix series Queenstown from Jodi Matterson and Libbie Doherty, and upcoming title Villain 2 from Sharp House and Vertigo Films.

Bains is an experienced private equity and structured finance investor who has participated in numerous media transactions at Saepio Capital, Blackstone and TBC Holdings. All four founders will serve as managing partners of Time Zone Capital.

“Our ambition is to build the world’s leading independent film and television lending platform, creating a global, technology-driven financing business across the content capital stack,” said Hamm.“Over time we see significant opportunities to expand into sales, distribution, P&A and other adjacent areas, creating a more integrated financing and commercial ecosystem around independent content.”

Edwards said: “Traditional studio output arrangements continue to evolve, while streaming platforms, international co-productions and independent financing models are reshaping how content is developed, financed and distributed. Production is becoming more decentralized, enabling a broader range of filmmakers and producers to reach international audiences. Capital needs to evolve with that reality.”

Sherman added: “This shift is creating new opportunities for investors to participate in a broader range of projects and support premium intellectual property with global commercial potential. Our focus is on bringing the capital and expertise needed to help those projects reach their full potential.”

Bains added: “Our goal is to bring institutional-grade underwriting, structuring and portfolio construction to independent film and television finance. We believe the strongest opportunities emerge when creative quality, commercial viability and disciplined underwriting are aligned.”
