The Five Star Weekend, the new Jennifer Garner drama series, is finally here.
The Peacock series just arrived on the streamer on Thursday (July 9), and stars D’Arcy Carden, Gemma Chan, Regina Hall, Chloë Sevigny, Harlow Jane, and Timothy Olyphant.
The series is “centered on Hollis Shaw (Garner), a famed cook and best-selling author known for her delicious recipes, impeccable taste, and warm demeanor, who suffers a devastating loss.”
Here’s a synopsis: “Unable to move forward, the death starts to expose the cracks in Hollis’s picture-perfect life—her strained marriage, her complicated relationship with her daughter, and her growing pursuit of validation from her fans. In an effort to overcome grief and find herself again, Hollis gets the idea to host a weekend away at her house on Nantucket with three friends from different stages in her life: her childhood, her twenties, thirties, and one surprise fifth star. Set against a luxurious and coastal backdrop, the stars will mature in ways they could never imagine as boundaries are pushed and secrets are exposed.”
The cast also includes Rob Huebel, David Denman, Josh Hamilton, West Duchovny, Judy Greer, Tory Devon Smith, Morrison Keddie, and Roberta Colindrez.
But what do the critics have to say so far?
The Five Star Weekend currently has an 84% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
TV Guide gave it a 7 out of 10, writing: “Despite some flaws, The Five Star Weekend is an excellent little tonic of a TV show, lifted up by its refreshing groundedness and packed with characters and performances you won’t mind spending a few long summer days with.”
Vulture writes; “We watch them let loose. We watch them eat. We watch them laugh. We watch them live, and that’s such a departure from the grim depths to which women’s TV has sunk that it makes The Five Star Weekend worth the trip.”
Variety says: “That a series finally found some new themes to focus on is as much a soothing break as all the B-roll of ocean waves and clapboard houses.”
The Daily Beast says: “[Its] star-studded cast helps elevate a story that, in spirit if not specifics, has been seen before.”
IndieWire gives it a C+, writing: “All told, and especially by the end, the limited series (which could, in theory, become an ongoing series) is best when it’s not taking itself too seriously.”
THR says: “The Five-Star Weekend never wants for story. There’s always something going on, and if you’re not into one particular something, another something is just around the corner.”
TIME says: “Casting choices are crucial for a show like this, whose emotional beats have to ring true even as its surface gleams with fantastical luxury, and all of Weekend’s stars are as suited to their characters as Garner.”
The Wrap writes; “Five Star Weekend creates a chic yet cozy world filled with relatably flawed and likable characters.”
