One Night Only is now in theaters, and people might be curious about that surprising ending.
The Will Gluck rom-com, co-starring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner, arrived in theaters on Friday (August 7).
Here’s a synopsis: “Allie and Owen are two love-starved strangers who crash into each other in an ever-so-slightly fictionalized New York City on the one night of the year when single people are allowed to have sex. Recently dumped Owen and hopeful romantic Allie might be the only two singles in the city looking for more than just a quick encounter. They both feel a spark when they meet, but a series of missteps and side quests complicate their night, keeping them apart. As they each race toward and away from each other across the city, they just might discover that the one thing they want most is closer than they think.”
The film also stars Maya Hawke, Julia Fox, King Princess, Ben Marshall, Ziwe, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton.
But what happened in the end? Here’s a breakdown, including an explanation from the director himself…
WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!
How Does ‘One Night Only’ End?
By the end of the film, Allie is sure she’s developed feelings for Owen and thinks he might be her person, so she goes to the pizza shop to try and find him.
He’s there, and he makes a pizza for the two to share. Before they can get together, Malika asks to see Owen, who leaves for their apartment. Malika says she regrets wanting to be with someone else, and Owen realizes he wants to be with Allie. He leaves to go to Allie’s apartment to find her. She’s not there. He visits his mom’s apartment and confesses he’s never met anyone like Allie before.
When Allie gets back home, the boy her roommate was babysitting tells her that a man came to look for her, so she heads to her favorite place, the red lighthouse under the George Washington Bridge, hoping to find him. He’s there with her exact coffee order, as they reveal to each other they’d like to be together.
They go into the lighthouse and make out. But with about 10 minutes left, instead of having sex, they agree to date instead.
The movie flashes forward by a year to the next day of legal sex, and they’re still dating. After the countdown reaches zero, they think about going out for dinner, but start kissing and head to her bedroom as the boy her roommate is babysitting says “Finally.”
What did the director say about that ending?
Will Gluck addressed the surprising ending in an interview with Today.
“Even though it works out the way it’s supposed to, it’s not where we think it’s going to be. So anything that’s a little different is kind of refreshing,” he said.
“First of all, they didn’t have much time left, so practically it wouldn’t have been a very fun experience. It’d be very quick,” he added of their choice not to have sex while it was still egal.
“It’s just, ‘I really want to spend more time with you.’ My favorite line in the movie is when Owen says to (Allie), ‘I don’t want this moment to end,’ meaning the moment they’re in each other’s arms, talking. At that moment, Owen would rather spend the last eight minutes talking and being with her than having sex. He chose romance and love … which I think is kind of cool.”
He also revealed that he cut “so much nudity” from the movie.
