Lupita Nyong’o is sharing an update on her health.
Earlier this year, the 43-year-old The Odyssey actress revealed that she has been battling reproductive health issues for over a decade, had doctors had recently discovered that she had over 50 uterine fibroids.
Per Cleveland Clinic: “Uterine fibroids are a common type of noncancerous tumor that can grow in and on your uterus. Not all fibroids cause symptoms, but when they do, symptoms can include heavy menstrual bleeding, back pain, frequent urination and pain during sex. Small fibroids often don’t need treatment, but larger fibroids can be treated with medications or surgery.”
Lupita underwent her first myomectomy to remove the fibroids from the lining of her uterus in 2014, the same year she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her breakout role in 12 Years a Slave.
In a new interview with Who What Wear published on Thursday (July 9), Lupita shared an update on her health, and revealed that she recently underwent her second myomectomy.
“If I could be very honest with you, I haven’t been in New York,” Lupita shared. “I’ve actually been recuperating from a surgery, so I’ve been away, in nature, taking care of myself.”
“I realized this system has failed me and I got to try and understand the female body for myself,” she said. “I would love for there to be more solutions for women than just cutting us open.”
“Why is this thing that’s so common a mystery?” Lupita questioned. “We should know about fibroids as much as we know about impounded wisdom teeth. Every single girl should know about the risk of fibroids in their teens when they’re learning about their period and their reproductive system.”
“It was just a very brutal reminder that no number of red carpets will protect me from poor health,” she added.
In another recent interview, Lupita responded to backlash over her casting as Helen of Troy in The Odyssey.
