Mikey Madison is shedding light on her own social reckoning.
The Oscar winner—who plays real-life Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen in The Social Network’s forthcoming sequel The Social Reckoning—shared insight into her decision to step away from having an online presence.
“It was just a personal choice I made a really long time ago,” Madison exclusively told E! News at the movie’s world premiere in New York City Oct. 4. “I've never really been on social media.”
But her outlook on the digital world made her especially equipped to play Haugen, who worked alongside reporter Jeff Horwitz, played by Jeremy Allen White in the film, to uncover and expose the internal documents known as the "Facebook Files” in 2021.
“She's she is such an incredible woman,” the 27-year-old said of Haugen. “I certainly don't know if I've ever been as strong and brave as she has been in her life, but I think that's something really incredible to strive towards.”
“The way that I see Frances is she has really been striving to leave the world a better place than when she entered it,” she added. “And I think that that's something that I will hopefully do one day.”
But Madison isn’t the only star in the film—which also includes Jeremy Strong, Billy Magnussen and Bill Burr—who has come to look at social media through a critical lens.
After all, White—who shares daughters Ezer, 7, and Dolores, 5, with ex-wife Addison Timlin—explained how “hugely important” it is for kids to stay unplugged for as long as possible.
“I was very lucky in a sense. I was born in 1991. I got to know the world without all this stuff,” he told E! News in a separate interview. “I can remember a time without all this stuff. I worry about young people, children.”
That’s why he believes “kids need to keep their worlds as small as possible for as long as possible,” he explained, “and I think it's hard with all this stuff and with kids being introduced earlier and earlier to it.”
And with all the other learning curves kids have to deal with, social media should take a backseat for as long as possible.
“It's hard enough growing up and comparing yourself to all of your classmates, your school, and your community,” he added. “I can't imagine what it's like to grow up comparing yourself with the world.”
