New Girl star Jake Johnson’s next project with Apple, The Dink, will arrive on the heels of the Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed finale.

Though “DINK” can be an acronym for “dual income, no kids” the Apple film centers around the other common association with the word, the sport, or “epidemic” as Ed Harris’ character Chuck Boyd calls it: pickleball.

Early on in the clip, Jake Johnson’s former tennis star Dusty Boyd trips over the net and injures his wrist in a bad way. A visit to a doctor played by Ben Stiller, who also produced the film, lands him a “prescription” for pickleball, which Stiller describes as “dorky” but also “the fastest road back to tennis” for Dusty.

Cut to Johnson attempting an overhead serve with his pickleball partner Candace (Mary Steenburgen) halting him mid leap and correcting his serve to underhand.

Thanks to Candace, Dusty starts to enjoy pickleball, and he becomes torn between the popular past time and the more elite sport of tennis. Enter his childhood nemesis Andy Roddick, and the former pro finds himself in a desperate battle for his father’s country club, where he was formerly coaching children before pickleball entered his life.

For Harris’ solemn Chuck, it’s not just about pickleball, but “the decline of humanity itself.” He suggests a duel, not with guns like Chloe Fineman’s character things, but on the court, to officially settle which sport is king.

The comedy film also stars atton Oswalt, Chloe Fineman, Chris Parnell and Aaron Chen. Josh Greenbaum directed the pic, which is produced by Stiller and John Lesher for Red Hour Films as well as Rob Paris and Mike Witherill for Rivulet Entertainment. Star Johnson also serves as producer.

The Dink is written by Sean Clements and is executive produced by Rick Steele, Clements, Greenbaum, Joe Hardesty, Jonathan McCoy and Daniel Crosser.
