There are few fashion items as instantly recognizable as a cowboy boot. Born out of function and deeply rooted in American history, the western staple has spent decades moving in and out of the fashion zeitgeist, crossing from ranches and rodeos into music, Hollywood, and runways.
Cowboy boots are everywhere heading into fall 2026. But this time around, you don't need to pair them with head-to-toe denim and a ten-gallon hat to get in on the trend.
Instead, fashion's latest interpretation of western style is all about borrowing from the aesthetic, weathered leather, fringe, denim, studded accessories, and mixing those pieces with the classics already hanging in your closet.
It's an approach celebrity stylist Erin Walsh, who works with Anne Hathaway and Selena Gomez, is very much on board with. “The western trend is everywhere right now, but I say take trends in doses,” the Marshalls and TJ Maxx Fashion Style Expert told E!.
“Adding subtle touches with accessories and texture is the easiest way to embrace a trend without it becoming inauthentic to you.”
So, how exactly do you do that? We asked Walsh for her best tips for wearing cowboy boots and western-inspired pieces without looking like you're headed to a themed party.
“Let them be the statement while keeping the rest of the look effortless,” Walsh says. “I love pairing boots with relaxed denim, a crisp oversized button-down, or a chic slip dress.”
Rather than matching the ruggedness of a cowboy boot with equally western pieces, Walsh likes playing with contrast. “The contrast between something structured and something softer always feels modern,” she explained.

And you don't need to reinvent your wardrobe to make cowboy boots work. In fact, Walsh's no-fail outfit formula is probably already sitting in your closet. “You can’t go wrong with keeping it minimal and elevated,” she says. “A bootcut denim jean, a white tee, and of course a quality pair of boots. That’s it.”
And while it's simple, Walsh shared that's kind of the point. “It’s simple, but not boring because you’re letting the boots do the talking,” she explained. If you want to add another layer, she suggests throwing on a blazer to dress things up or a denim jacket to lean further into the trend. Wide-leg jeans work, too, especially with a colorful handbag thrown into the mix.

If you're buying your first-ever pair of cowboy boots, now probably isn't the time to test-drive bright colors stacked on top of five-inch heels. For a pair you'll actually wear all fall, Walsh recommends shopping for a “muted tan or brown that hits at the mid calf.” It's what she called “the ultimate gateway boot."
And while it's easy to get distracted by how fun a pair of boots looks, don't forget the important question of whether or not you can actually walk around in them.
“The truth is the most expensive piece in your closet is the one you never wear—so don’t sacrifice comfort,” Walsh explained. “That’s the difference between a well-loved piece and one that collects dust in your closet.”
