The first feature-length animated Pokémon movie in years is set to hit theaters in 2027.
In partnership with Japanese animation studio CloverWorks, Pokémon: Wild Card was announced during Sunday night’s closing ceremony of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships, in San Francisco.
A short teaser featuring a trading card game player and a ghostly Pokémon named Mimikyu also was released. You can watch it above.
The film tells the story of a Pokémon TCG player and his partner Mimikyu. When the time comes to put their cards on the table, will they have what it takes to achieve their goals?
The character Mimikyu first appears in the 2016 video games. Pokémon Sun and Moon. Mimikyu covers itself in an old rag painted to look like Pikachu because it is lonely and wants to be loved like the famous mouse. Its actual body under the disguise is a black blob with two round eyes, and it moves by dragging its body along the ground. Mimikyu hates bright sunlight and prefers to stay in dark, hidden places. Mimikyu has since appeared in multiple games and the Pokémon Trading Card Game, as well as the anime adaptation of the series where it is voiced by Billy Bob Thompson.
In the teaser, we get a quick glimpse of Mimikyu dressed in a yellow hoodie. The clip reveals the film is coming in 2027 “and beyond” which indicates there’s even more on the horizon.
The most recent Pokémon movie, Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle, was released in 2020 in Japan and the following year in the U.S.
Disney+ recently greenlighted Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu, a new stop-motion series as part of a global distribution deal with The Pokémon Company International. The series will debut on Disney XD and stream exclusively on DIsney+ in 2027.
