EXCLUSIVE: Netflix made a preemptive buy of Wingmom, a comedy film script by Sam Laybourne. Deal was high six figures, and Jeff Robinov is producing alongside Tabitha Shick of Talking Pictures.
The spec script has the potential as a strong vehicle for an actress, and at least one is already circling. When a fiercely devoted single mom discovers that her 25-year-old son is considering opting-out of real world romance, she decides to teach him how to get a girl as is wingmom. What follows is an edgy, R-rated comedy. Background: the script is in the vein of early Apatow, a la The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up.
This is Laybourne’s second recent feature sale, after landing his spec The Wedding Exorcist at Amazon with Jake Kasdan producing. He’s currently a co-executive producer of the sitcom Ghosts, and also held the same title on DMV, both for CBS. Before that he was showrunner and EP on Acapulco for Lionsgate and Apple TV, and supervised the pilot Remix for Fox with Mnelik Belilgne and the series Only In America for CBS with Picturestart.
Separately, his pitch Elder Millennial sold to NBC with Liza Shlesinger starring and Tom Werner producing and his pilot The Hug Machine has Akiva Schaffer directing for CBS and Party Over Here. Lotta action for the former co-EP of Black-ish. He started as a staff writer on Arrested Development.
