The World Cup, which smashed records for viewing during its just-concluded five-week run, provided a significant boost to fledgling streaming outlet Fox One.
Spain won the World Cup on Sunday to cap off the event, which was held at 16 sites in North America with an expanded field of 48 nations. Fox and Spanish-language rights holder Telemundo have both regularly reported new milestones in viewership due to factors like the audience-friendly time zones of the games and the ongoing growth of interest in soccer.
Fox One carried all 104 tournament games, which aired on the Fox broadcast network and cable sibling FS1. Free streaming outlet Tubi also simulcast two initial games, providing additional promotional real estate for Fox One.
The biggest single source of new subscriptions was direct distribution, which accounted for 40% of the month’s total, Antenna said. YouTube Primetime Channels, which started distributing Fox One on June 1, accounted for 15% of sign-ups. Amazon Channels, a key initial partner for Fox as it rolled out the streaming flagship, retreated to 19% share in June, compared with 58% of sign-ups from launch through May 2026.
Fox decided to launch Fox One only after sitting out the streaming battles that consumed most of its rivals in recent years, insisting it was content to largely focus on its linear TV business. As pay-TV levels have continued to decline, albeit not as steeply as they once were, the rollout of a streamer as a way to keep reaching younger cord-cutters or cord-nevers was a natural one.
Fox One has a strategic rational in keeping with that of ESPN’s stand-alone streamer, which launched the same month. The two services are available as a cross-company bundle package. Both corporate parents have shied away from offering specific targets for consumer adoption, characterizing the services as complementary with their linear networks.
“With the 2026/2027 NFL season kicking off in a matter of weeks, it will be interesting to see how Fox One retains a cohort that came in for a different sport,” the post added. “Retention through the early weeks of the season will offer a useful read on how much of the June cohort was there for the tournament versus the broader service.”
