Sara Haines is back on The View after missing Wednesday’s (September 16) episode, and she tearfully revealed the reason for her absence.

The 48-year-old co-host returned to the Hot Topics table on Thursday (September 17) and became emotional while explaining that her father-in-law had passed away.

Why did Sara Haines miss The View?

Sara shared that her husband Max Shifrin‘s father had been in hospice care for about a week before his passing.

She said she found out about his passing right before Wednesday’s show and decided not to appear.

She also became emotional while speaking about the close relationship between Max and his father and what the loss has meant for their family, calling Max‘s father “the most important person in Max’s life.”

“I think I learned about this man on my first date because it was everything… It was Max’s North Star, so it’s the chapter we’re in, and we all will be a part of this club eventually. But wow, it’s brutal,” she explained, via TV Insider.

Sara and Max have been married since 2014 and share three children together.

Her absence had already sparked questions among viewers after Whoopi Goldberg briefly addressed it during Wednesday’s episode. Joy Behar also clarified on-air that Sara was not sick, but the co-hosts did not reveal the reason she was missing at the time.

The explanation comes as The View continues its 30th season. Sara, Whoopi, Joy, Sunny Hostin, Alyssa Farah Griffin and Ana Navarro all returned as co-hosts for Season 30.

Earlier today, Whoopi also revealed why she’ll be missing from The View for most of the next two weeks.

The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET on ABC.
