Serena Williams has her family cheering her on in the crowd at her Wimbledon return!
The 44-year-old tennis player played against Maya Joint of Australia in a first round match for the Ladies’ Singles tournament at Wimbledon on Tuesday (June 30) in London, England.
This is Serena‘s first ladies’ singles match in nearly four years and she has her husband Alexis Ohanian and their daughters Olympia, 8, and Adira, 2, in the audience.
Serena‘s older sister Venus Williams was also sitting in her box at the match. They will be playing in the doubles tournament together, beginning on Thursday.
Serena recently addressed the reason behind her return to tennis.
“I thought I should really take this opportunity. Who knows if I’ll ever make it here again. This could be it,” she admitted to the journalists (via AP). “I was like, ‘What’s wrong with me, Serena? What are you thinking? Are you nuts? Like, you really should do this.’ People live to be an athlete. I have this great opportunity to showcase what I do, what I do best, I suppose. Yeah, I think ultimately I was like that is pretty cool, so I should do it.”
Maya has praised Serena for her return.
“I have so much respect for her. She was one of my idols growing up, I’m just really excited to have the opportunity to play against her…Serena is still an amazing player, so I’m sure it’s going to be a difficult match but I also think that I have a chance to win,” her young opponent said in response to the news.
