John Cusack is finally addressing the long-standing rumor that he was offered a part in John Hughes‘ classic film The Breakfast Club.
The 60-year-old actor was on a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz and the host mentioned his surprise that John didn’t “pop up in other things,” mentioning that there was some “conjecture” regarding a role he was supposedly offered in The Breakfast Club.
According to rumors, John was offered the part of “the criminal” John Bender, a part that eventually went to Judd Nelson.
John said he was never offered the role, but there was a point in time when he thinks Hughes “thought he wanted me to do it” and he thinks he would have done it, adding that the script was “cool” but things didn’t pan out.
Horowitz mentioned his “teen idol” label and joked it probably made the Stand By Me actor gag.
“They say fame is something that you have to sort of deal with because you don’t really get prepared for it. Especially when you’re probably a teenager,” John said. “But I was lucky because I think, maybe the way my parents were, or the people that I admired. You know, I hadn’t done anything. So I was never gonna buy my hype.”
John talked about his pivot away from his film career earlier this year.
