EXCLUSIVE: Lauren London is set to portray Snoop Dogg’s mom, Beverly Tate, in Snoop, Universal Pictures’ definitive biopic of entertainment mogul and icon, Snoop Dogg. Jonathan Daviss will portray Snoop with Myles Bullock playing Dr. Dre. Universal Pictures will release the pic on August 6, 2027.
Craig Brewer is set to direct the film based on his rewrite of Joe Robert Cole’s original script. Brewer most recently directed Song Sung Blue for Universal’s specialty studio Focus Features. Snoop Dogg and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker will produce. Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Allan Mandelbaum will produce.
After coming out of Long Beach, CA, Snoop Dogg turned into not only one of the biggest rappers of the 90s but one of the biggest pop culture icons by the end of the decade. Tate, also known as Beverly Broadus-Green, was a church choir director who had a massive impact on her son Calvin Broadus including giving him the inspiration for the nickname Snoop. Broadus loved watching Peanuts as a kid and Beverly would ultimately start calling him Snoopy cause he reminded him of the classic dog from the series.
As for London, the role marks a full-circle moment for her and Snoop who worked together in the early 2000s on various music videos. London, who was married to hip hop legend Nipsey Hussle, would come together with Snoop again to honor Nipsey after he was murdered in 2019
Michael Beugg and Jeb Brody will executive produce. The film will incorporate music from Snoop’s vast catalogue. Senior Vice President of Production Development Ryan Jones and Director of Development Tony Ducret will oversee the project for the Studio.
The film is the first project under Death Row Pictures’ overall deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment. Long revered as a visual powerhouse, Death Row Records now embarks on an ambitious new chapter with the expansion of Death Row Pictures. This strategic evolution cements the brand’s influence beyond music, ushering in a new era of innovative onscreen storytelling.
Universal Pictures had success with musical biopics detailing the backstories of significant artists. 2015’s Straight Outta Compton traced the roots of the seminal rap group N.W.A. and their rise to fame, becoming one of the most influential acts of the gangsta rap and West Coast hip hop sub-genres. The film grossed more than $200 million and was nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Original Screenplay.
