EXCLUSIVE: Following his first Tony win this past June, Alden Ehrenreich has zeroed in on his next big role and he looks to have found a very high-profile project as sources say he is set to join Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in Universal Pictures Miami Vice ’85, a new original take on the classic 80s drama series. Joseph Kosinski is directing the pic from a script by Dan Gilroy.
The film explores the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami in an all-new version of Miami Vice, inspired by the pilot episode of the landmark Universal Television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking. Bringing current technological expertise to the sights and sounds of the series, Miami Vice ‘85 will be filmed for IMAX and is set for release by Universal Pictures on May 19, 2028. Production will begin in 2026.
The film is produced by Dylan Clark/Dylan Clark Productions and Kosinski. Gilroy’s script is based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich from the series executive produced by Yerkovich and Michael Mann. Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay. Exec Vice President of Production Development Sara Scott and Creative Executive of Production Development Christina Hoffrogge will oversee the project for the studio.
As for Ehrenreich, the role comes following his huge win at the Tony’s this past June for his critically acclaimed role in the play Becky Shaw. His standout performance earned widespread acclaim from critics and following his big win, Enreneich had his choice of parts to choose from. Sources say he had upwards of eight offers, but ultimately couldn’t resist the opportunity to star opposite Jordan and Butler in this new exciting take from Kosinski.
Next up, Ehrenreich will be seen opposite Helen Mirren in Anton Corbijn’s A Talent for Murder, which will have its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival. He will also star opposite Daisy Ridley in The Last Resort, which will be released theatrically in 2027. Other notable credits include Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Zach Cregger’s Weapons.
