Barbie 2 has hit a major roadblock.
People have been expecting a sequel to the 2023 mega-hit for a while now, especially since the Greta Gerwig-directed film earned more than $1.4 billion at the box office in addition to earning eight Oscar nominations.
But a new report from The New York Times suggests the issue is stemming from Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is hesitant to give stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling the kind of deals they’re after for a sequel, along with profit participation.
Ryan is reportedly looking for a $20 million pay raise. He received a best supporting nom for his role as Ken.
Warner Bros. did not require the stars of Barbie to commit to any sequels, meaning they have to re-negotiate deals for any future films.
The New York Times also reports that Greta and her writing partner and husband Noah Baumbach have an idea for Barbie 2, but are unwilling to share it until the deals are finalized.
In a statement, Warner Bros. Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca said, “We have a rights deal with Mattel in place and have made a series of big offers to try and finalize deals to make the next Barbie film. Unfortunately, we have been unable to reach an agreement thus far.”
If the deal isn’t in place soon, the rights will revert to Mattel in December, meaning Mattel would have to redevelop the IP for a new movie. They would have to get a new cast and and filmmaker.
