Matthew McConaughey’s singing skills may rival some of the pros.
Indeed, the 56-year-old has released a new bluegrass track “Quill” as a part of the soundtrack for his upcoming film The Rivals of Amziah King, where he plays the unofficial mayor of an Oklahoma town who often jams with his buddies.
The Sing actor had some assistance in this musical effort, with Ben Hardesty as well as Miranda Zickler, Angelina LookingGlass and Andrea Pister appearing on the tune.
But the new film—which releases Aug. 14—isn’t all about fun jam sessions, as beekeeper Amziah King (McConaughey) must navigate sabotaging rivals of his honey business alongside his estranged foster daughter Kateri (LookingGlass).
And this is a significant role for McConaughey, as it was one of his first movies in over six years. Speaking about why he took on the role, the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days star shared that the project had a lot of heart.
“Why did I come to this film, what was it?” he said during the film’s debut at SXSW in March 2025, according to Deadline. “Not often does something cross my desk where I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s an original language! I’ve never heard that before, but I know those people. Oh, that’s an original, time, place and space. Oh, there’s some real humor.’”
And he teased, “It’s also some kind of musical!”
Indeed, McConaughey is no stranger to a musical film, as he appeared in the 2016 animated movie Sing and its 2021 sequel. And he was happy to perform a tune, as he previously shared how much fun he has singing to himself.
“I go around the house humming or whistling some ditty,” the Oscar winner told Time ahead of the release of Sing in 2016, “and like most people, sing in the shower—and it sounds real good to the person who’s singing it.”
And while this actor has dipped his toes into the musical world, there are plenty of musicians who have done the opposite. Read on to see some talented vocalists-turned-onscreen stars…
