Class is in session at the Professor Puth academy of music. Charlie Puth served as the special guest on the latest episode of Celebrity Substitute posted Tuesday (Oct. 6), giving children at a New York City public elementary school a lesson on his craft.

The segment opened with Puth sitting down with host Julian Shapiro-Barnum for a quick convo. “The goal today is to tell the kids that anything can be made with music,” the musician explained. “It just enhances every other aspect of their lives. It enhances science and math. It just kind of takes the pressure off.”

He also acknowledged the full-circle moment of his teaching stint, noting that his mom was a music educator when he was growing up. “I felt very proud, and it’s probably why I am who I am today,” the singer/songwriter said. “Being that I’m now an unofficial professor.”

When the kids entered the class, Puth started out looking a little overwhelmed at the amount of students he was about to work with. After answering some of their questions about his career and life as a new dad (Puth recently welcomed a son with wife Brooke Sansone), the hitmaker gave each of the kids an opportunity to record everyday noises into his music workspace that he then combined into a fun beat. One student scraped the teeth of a comb into the microphone, while another peeled masking tape on and off a roll.

The group then commenced writing lyrics for their song, alternating between singing and rapping adorably. “All of my friends, they all like music/ They love the beat when it goes da da da da da da,” Puth and the kids belted out.

The educational side quest comes after Puth wrapped up the North American leg of his Whatever’s Clever! Tour, which kicked off in April. He recently canceled the New Zealand and Australia dates of the trek.

His latest album, Whatever’s Clever!, debuted at No. 46 on the Billboard 200.
