Sweet Magnolias fans were surprised to discover that fan-favorite character Tyler “Ty” Townsend wasn’t featured in the show’s fifth season, but we finally know why actor Carson Rowland didn’t return and what it could mean for his future on the Netflix series.
Season 5 of Sweet Magnolias dropped on Netflix on Thursday (June 11), and viewers who quickly binged all 10 episodes immediately began discussing Ty’s absence.
Ty left to go on tour with his bandmate at the end of season 4, but the series gave little indication that he wouldn’t return, especially after playing a major role throughout the show’s first three seasons.
His absence is even more notable given where things were left with Annie (Anneliese Judge). After finally getting together in season 4, the pair’s relationship was left in limbo following a major fight.
Why did Carson Rowland leave Sweet Magnolias?
According to showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson, Carson‘s departure came down to a combination of creative decisions and the actor wanting to pursue other opportunities.
Deadline confirmed through multiple sources that Carson was balancing production on Season 4 with other projects, including co-executive producing The Testament of Ann Lee and starring in the indie film The Queen’s Jewel.
“It was his choice,” Anderson told the outlet, adding that she couldn’t recall whether Carson had informed producers of his decision by the time she wrote the Season 4 finale. She had previously suggested Ty and Annie still had a future together.
With Carson‘s return uncertain, Anderson incorporated Ty’s absence into the Season 5 storyline, leaving Annie to navigate life without him.
Did Sweet Magnolias season 5 tease Ty’s return?
The season 5 finale may have planted the seeds for Ty’s return.
During Annie’s graduation, she receives flowers from Ty and sends him a text thanking him before tossing out the bouquet and seemingly moving forward amid a potential love triangle involving Blake (Austin Woods) and Noah (Aidan Merwarth).
However, in the episode’s final moments, Ty sends Annie a text reading, “Miss you,” and later attempts to FaceTime her, though she misses the call.
Anderson wouldn’t confirm or deny whether the teaser means Carson could return.
“We’ll have to wait and see, won’t we?,” she said.
Netflix hasn’t shared if Sweet Magnolias will be renewed for a sixth season, but here are updates on the other shows it has canceled and renewed this year so far!
