Michael Johnston is opening up about coming out as gay and how he wasn’t actually open about his sexuality while starring on Teen Wolf.
The 30-year-old Obsession actor is featured on the cover of Attitude Magazine‘s new issue and he also stepped out for the Attitude Awards on Wednesday (October 7) in London, England.
Michael had his big break while playing the openly gay character Corey Bryant on MTV’s Teen Wolf series, but he wasn’t out at the time.
Michael Johnston knew he was gay at a young age
In his Attitude interview, Michael says that he knew he was attracted to men at a young age, as young as 11 or 12.
“It was the worst possible thing that could ever happen to me because all I had learned in church was that being gay was the worst thing that you could be, that you’d go straight to hell,” Michael said about his upbringing in North Carolina in a Southern Baptist family.
Michael said that he used to tell himself, “I’m an abomination, I’m disgusting.”
Michael Johnston didn’t come out until he played gay roles
Ultimately, Michael hid his sexuality until he moved to Los Angeles to become an actor, though he played multiple gay roles before coming out. In addition to Teen Wolf, he starred in the queer drama Slash.
“And of course, of course, I’m playing these gay roles… and I wasn’t really out yet,” he said, adding that an aunt joked at the time that his gay roles might “convert” him.
“But playing those roles early on definitely helped me to accept and to change my view on my sexuality. I used to think it was a weakness, and now I think it’s a strength because it’s just made me more empathetic,” Michael said. “Growing up, any time I saw a gay character… ‘Wow, there are others. I’m not alone.’ So if I’m going to be that for someone else… that’s incredible.”
Michael Johnston teases a new queer project
Michael revealed to the mag, “There will be a really incredible queer story in my future, and I’m so excited to play it and to have my steamy moment.”
