EXCLUSIVE: Netflix will add dozens classic Cantinflas movies to its service as part of a wave of programming coming to the streamer to mark Mexican Cinema Day. It also teased an expansion of action movie franchise Counterattack, a new movie called 35 Days, and has greenlit a trio of feature-docs, per our earlier exclusive.

Mexican actor, comedian and filmmaker Mario Fortino Alfonso Moreno Reyes is better known by his stage name Cantinflas. Netflix will stream a collection of 35 films from the Mexican cinema pioneer, including classics such as Pepe, El padrecito and Romeo y Julieta.

The movies will stream on Netflix in a window that starts on September 1 and runs through end-March 2027.

As part of the wider Mexican cinema push ahead of Mexican Cinema Day on August 15, Netflix will have a special section on its site dedicated to storytelling from the country.

Other new projects we can reveal include 35 Days (35 días). The film will follow Julián, a loving father and travel journalist. His drinking leads him to spend 35 days in rehab. Per the synopsis, without his cell phone, and as he learns to ask for help, he begins the journey back to himself and to his family.

Netflix also teased that more Counterattack (aka Counterstrike) is coming. The 2025 Counterattack action movie starred Luis Alberti, Noé Hernández, Leonardo Alonso, Luis Curiel, David León and Guillermo Nava. Netflix said there will be an “expansion of the universe” and not a straight sequel or prequel. It also said there will be more than one new instalment. It looks like Counterattack is becoming a Mexican action movie franchise.

Here are the specifics on the Cantinflas movies coming to Netflix.

The collection on the streamer will feature some of Cantinflas’s most iconic films, including Ni sangre ni arena, El gendarme desconocido, El analfabeto, El padrecito, Pepe, Romeo y Julieta, El bombero atómico, El siete machos, Su excelencia and El bolero de Raquel.

There will also be: El circo, Un día con el diablo, El señor fotógrafo, El profe, El barrendero, Por mis pistolas, El patrullero 777, Conserje en condominio, El ministro y yo, Caballero a la medida, A volar joven, Los tres mosqueteros, Gran hotel, Soy un prófugo, El supersabio, El mago, El portero, Si yo fuera diputado, Abajo el telón, Sube y baja, El extra, Entrega inmediata, El señor doctor, Un Quijote sin mancha and Don Quijote cabalga de nuevo.
