The British singer-songwriter addressed a person on X who’d attended one of her recent shows at the O2 Arena in London and posted about feeling like Allen’s performance had come up short. “No support act,” the critical concertgoer had written in a bulleted list of observations. “Arrived on stage at 9:10pm. All wrapped up by 10pm. Not one word to the audience. £86 to sit in the gods.”

In her Monday (June 29) response, the musician addressed each point in order. “There is a support act,” she began. “The show has always been advertised as ‘Lily Allen performs West End Girl.'”

“I was a few mins late as my tights were laddered and i had to change them,” Allen continued. “The show is just over an hour as it’s just the album in its entirety. It’s my artistic choice not to talk to the audience, the fourth wall helps with the storytelling. Most people find it to be effective.”

“I don’t want anyone to feel ripped off,” she added. “Everyone on this tour is really working very hard to give people the best show we possibly can, and i’m extremely proud of it.”

On the platform, the original poster clarified that he found Allen’s performance “brilliant — but it can’t be right to charge that much for an hour, late on Sunday night.” He also wrote that he wasn’t as critical of the short setlist as he was about his other points.

“no support act and not even a ‘thank you so much for coming’ was a bit weird,” he posted, to which Allen replied: “I’d happily concede that I’m a bit weird, though.”

The posts come shortly after the Grammy-nominated star wrapped up two nights at the O2 on June 27 and 28. Next, she’ll play a pair of shows in Dublin before circling back to the London venue for one more performance there.

The Lily Allen Performs West End Girl trek kicked off in March, four months after the release of West End Girl. The critically acclaimed project — on which Allen details the excruciating unraveling of a marriage — marked a major resurgence for the singer, marking her first Billboard 200 entry in seven years with a peak at No. 93.
