Michael Douglas is setting the record straight about a longtime rumor involving his personal life.
The 82-year-old Oscar-winning actor is promoting his new memoir One Helluva Ride, which includes candid stories about his relationships and past struggles.
In a new interview, Michael addressed a rumor that has followed him for decades that he once went to rehab for sex addiction.
He says that’s not what happened.
Michael Douglas denies longtime sex addiction rumor
Michael was asked about his romantic history during an interview with The Sunday Times.
“I don’t know if I slept with so many women, I don’t see it that way,” he said. “No, not me, no. I was a healthy product of the ’60s.”
Michael then questioned why the British press has remained so interested in his sex life.
The conversation eventually turned to longtime reports that he entered rehab for sex addiction in the 1990s.
“A British tabloid editor came up with this story, which, thank you very much, here we are talking about at 82,” Michael said. “It wasn’t true.”
While Michael denies going to rehab for sex addiction, he has previously said that he did enter rehab for alcohol abuse.
Back in 1994, he told The Washington Post that he had gone to rehab for “overwork and alcohol abuse” and said tabloids subsequently portrayed it as treatment for sex addiction.
Michael also addresses the rumor in One Helluva Ride, writing emphatically that he was never a sex addict.
During his new interview, Michael also clarified a story involving his now-wife Catherine Zeta-Jones.
He explained that Catherine told him that if their relationship was going to continue, she wanted it to be monogamous.
“And so I therefore, that evening, you know, made some calls to some people I was seeing, and that was that,” he recalled.
Michael and Catherine went on to marry in 2000 and recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
His new memoir also includes a major revelation about his relationship with Kathleen Turner while they were filming Romancing the Stone in the 1980s.
We previously reported on Michael revealing that he and Kathleen secretly became lovers and denied their relationship for decades.
One Helluva Ride will be released on Tuesday (October 6).
