Wanda Sykes is glad she passed on participating in Netflix’s The Roast of Kevin Hart.

In a new interview on Vulture’s Good One podcast, the 62-year-old comedian revealed that Kevin, 46, asked her to take part in the roast, which took place last month, but she declined.

“Kevin called me before it was announced, and I said, ‘No!,'” Wanda recalled. “He said, ‘Come on, Wanda. Come on, it’ll be good. It’ll be good for your special. You’ve got a special coming out.’ I was like, ‘Kevin, you know I love you, man.’ He goes, ‘I know. I know it’s not your thing. I know it’s not your thing.’ He’s like, ‘You’ll just come in, do your thing, get out of there.'”

When asked about what had gone wrong in the roast, Wanda answered, “Just lazy, lazy writing.”

“But I thought the same thing with the [2024 Tom] Brady roast too,” she continued. “Seems like the roasts, they’re just recycled, you know, sexist, racist, gay jokes. Like, come on.”

After watching the roast, Wanda knew she made the right choice to not participate in it.

“I consumed enough to go, ‘Thank god,'” Wanda said, noting she “went to the [WNBA’s Los Angeles] Sparks game instead.”

During the roast, controversial comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who is white, drew criticism for several jokes he made during the special, with fellow roaster Chelsea Handler labeling some of the material as “racist.”

Following the roast, Kevin shared his thoughts on Tony‘s jokes.
