Sam Altman is sharing his thoughts on Andrew Garfield playing him in the upcoming movie Artificial, and there’s one thing the actor apparently got exactly right!
The 41-year-old OpenAI CEO is portrayed by the 43-year-old actor in director Luca Guadagnino‘s new movie, which focuses on the five-day period in 2023 when Sam was removed as CEO of OpenAI before returning to the company days later.
In a new interview, Sam revealed that he has watched the movie’s trailer and even unexpectedly came face-to-face with Andrew while the actor was filming as him.
What does Sam Altman think of Andrew Garfield playing him?
“He did walk like me,” Sam told Vanity Fair.
He then revealed that Artificial actually filmed outside his home without him initially realizing what was happening.
“There were these notices on our street that there was going to be some filming or whatever. I didn’t realize what was going on. I paid no attention,” he recalled.
Sam said he went outside one morning to get coffee and discovered cameras on the street, along with Andrew dressed like him and carrying the same type of backpack.
“I felt I was in some weird glitch of the simulation or something,” he said of seeing the actor. “It was very strange.”
The two didn’t actually speak during the encounter.
“We waved and went on, but it was really weird,” Sam said, adding that it was strange seeing someone who had “nailed your kind of quirky mannerisms or whatever.”
He confirmed that he and Andrew have never spoken, explaining, “I waved at him that one time and that was it.”
What does Sam Altman say Artificial got wrong?
While Sam gave Andrew credit for his walk and mannerisms, he was less convinced by the accuracy of what he’s seen from the movie.
“I don’t think they’re going for accuracy,” he said after being asked about the trailer. “They’re trying to make a good movie and maybe it will be good.”
He added that he doesn’t expect it to be an “accurate depiction,” with one exception: “Except for the walk.”
Sam also pointed to one specific scene in the trailer that he says isn’t accurate. The scene shows Andrew‘s version of him entering a bunker with firearms displayed on the walls.
“There’s no bunker with firearms on the wall,” he said.
However, Sam acknowledged that he has what he described as a “survivalist mindset” and said his ranch can survive off-grid. He maintained that he doesn’t have a setup like the one shown in the trailer.
Sam also denied having any involvement in Amazon MGM Studios’ decision to drop Artificial earlier this year. When asked whether he or anyone acting on his behalf spoke to Amazon about the movie, he replied, “I did not, and I don’t know of anyone else who did.” He also said he never spoke to Jeff Bezos about it.
Neon later acquired the movie, which will hit theaters on December 25.
