Coven Academy has officially arrived, and viewers may already be wondering if the new supernatural series will return for Season 2!
The new Disney series premiered Thursday night (October 1) on Freeform and stars Malina Pauli Weissman, Malachi Barton, Tiffani Thiessen, Devon Sawa, Jordan Leftwich, Ora Duplass and more.
Created by High School Musical: The Musical: The Series creator Tim Federle, the show follows a group of teenage witches and warlocks at a magical boarding school in New Orleans.
So, is another season already in the works?
Is Coven Academy Renewed for Season 2?
As of October 1, Disney and Freeform have not announced a Season 2 renewal for Coven Academy.
However, the show’s creator has made it clear that he has hopes for the story to continue beyond its first season.
Speaking to Disney’s D23 ahead of the premiere, Tim Federle explained that Season 1 was constructed as a longer story that could lead into future seasons.
“It was really, ‘How do we tell a season’s worth of stories that hopefully then launch you into the next season, and the next, and the next, in a slow-burn kind of way?'” he said.
Tim also explained why he enjoys telling stories through television, saying that a series allows the story to keep developing rather than reaching a definitive endpoint.
“I love telling stories that go on and on,” he went on to say.
Of course, those comments shouldn’t be taken as confirmation that Season 2 is happening. Disney has not officially announced another season yet.
What Have the Coven Academy Stars Said About Season 2?
Some of the cast members are already thinking about what could happen if the show returns.
Tiffani Thiessen, who plays Miss Graves, and Devon Sawa, who plays Mr. Cole, recently spoke about what they’d like to explore in a potential second season.
Devon specifically said he’s interested in learning more about his character’s past if they get another season.
“I’m very interested to see if we get a Season 2, if they decide to come up with something of where he comes from,” he told Hollywood Life.
Tiffani also discussed where she thinks Miss Graves could go in a future season, pointing to her character’s attachment to the school and desire to take care of the students.
“I think she has such an urge to mother and to be a part of a big place where she can take care of people,” she said, adding that becoming head of the school is “very much [Miss Graves’] drive.”
How Many Episodes Are in Coven Academy Season 1?
Coven Academy has an unusual episode format.
Disney describes the first season as consisting of 21 bite-sized “chapters,” which together amount to more than five hours of storytelling.
However, Freeform is airing the series as 10 episodes across three nights.
Episodes 1-4 premiered October 1, followed by Episodes 5-7 on October 8 and Episodes 8-10, including the season finale, on October 15.
Viewers who would rather binge the series won’t have to wait that long: the full season becomes available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu on Friday (October 2).
Coven Academy also stars Louis Thresher, Swayam Bhatia, Keegan Connor Tracy, Brendon Tremblay, BJ Harrison and Nathaniel McIntyre.
