Olivia Rodrigo is giving fans a very limited opportunity to hear an outtake from her new record you look pretty sad for a girl so in love before it heads to streaming.
The 23-year-old superstar is releasing a new song called “serena joy” on Monday (August 24), and ahead of the streaming release, she put the song on a CD exclusive at Analog Record Shop in Orange County, Calif. ahead of her Daisy Chain Fields charity festival in a limited run of 500 in-store copies that quickly sold out.
“When we heard that Olivia Rodrigo was bringing an all-women music festival to Orange County, we were honestly just excited to see something this special happening right here in our hometown. As one of the closest record stores in the area, we wanted to find a way to support Daisy Chain Fields,” the record shop posted.

“We knew Olivia had a track record of supporting record stores, but we were still taken aback when we heard the news: Olivia is releasing a new song ahead of Daisy Chain Fields called ‘Serena Joy,’ and she wants the physical CD copies to be exclusively sold at Analog Record Shop. And the best part… She’s giving it to us 3 DAYS before anyone else can hear it. Three days early. More than anything, we’re grateful for what this represents: An artist building a stage for women in music and raising funds for women and girls. An artist willing to support a local independent record store. And a hometown getting to be part of something really special. That means a lot to us.”
Fans discovered the song title in a tiny glimpse on an early tracklist for the album. When it didn’t show up on the record, Olivia acknowledged in an interview with Etalk that it didn’t fit on the album, but that she hoped to release it eventually.
“I actually really love [“serena joy”]. It didn’t fit on the album. The record was very much a chronicle of a relationship — beginning, middle and end. But I hope that it’ll be a part of something else down the line,” she said.
As she said, the song is much more politically charged than the record, which revolves around a relationship.
If you didn’t know, Serena Joy is a character in The Handmaid’s Tale, played by Yvonne Strahovski. The song does not explicitly reference the show or character, but contains lyrics that play into the themes of the Margaret Atwood novel-turned-series.
“If they do it to them / They’ll do it to you,” she declares, seemingly in reference to the antagonist’s role in bringing about the dystopian empire of the series ruled by Gilead, until she’s shut out from a leadership position and ultimately a victim of the system she helped to set up, despite being one of the “good ones.”
The Daisy Chain Fields Music Festival founded by Olivia Rodrigo takes place as a single-day event on August 29 at Great Park in Irvine, Calif.
