Just after rebranding itself as a multi-content platform, Spotify is rolling out new controls to stop video from playing alongside music and podcasts.

Spotify is introducing new video controls that enable users to turn off video content, including music videos or video podcasts, as well as Canvas looping visuals. The toggles will be available for both personal and Family Plan accounts.

“More than 70% of Spotify users say more video content would enhance their experience on Spotify, but not every listener wants the same experience,” Spotify said in a statement. “By putting control directly in users’ hands, it’s now easier to switch without friction.”

The Verge points out that the controls don’t yet seem to be available for UK accounts or devices, but Spotify is rolling the update out globally. When available, they will appear under the “Content and Display” settings on a mobile device, or the “Display” section on desktop.

The new toggles appear alongside the toggle to disable Canvas clips, the looping autoplay video clips that Spotify added in 2019. Now, there will be a toggle for music videos, and another to disable all other videos, which includes podcasts.

Those who manage a Spotify Family Plan will have access to these controls for individual members of the plan. When video controls are disabled “at the plan level,” those users won’t have the option to switch to video versions of songs or podcasts. That’s notable for those who manage their kids’ Spotify access and for whatever reason only want them to access audio content.

The rollout comes at an interesting time for Spotify, which is going all-in on video content and expanding its offerings. To that end, the company recently said it should no longer be considered merely a streaming service, but a “multi-content platform”—which is honestly what you might think of the likes of YouTube, who has long offered both video and audio content.

“While we continue to expand our multi-format offerings, we see video as a complement to the content, not the core proposition, and these controls underscore our commitment to offering users a tailored experience,” said Spotify.
