The new movie Heart of the Beast is now in theaters and the emotional story will pull at heartstrings of moviegoers around the world.
Brad Pitt stars in the film, about a Special Forces veteran and his combat dog, who are stranded in the Alaskan wilderness after a harrowing plane crash.
A real-life German Shepherd named Uber takes on the role of Odin instead of having CGI fill in as the dog. And he truly gives an incredible performance!
Six-year-old Uber and three of his offspring take on the role in Heart of the Beast
Uber‘s head trainer Andrew Simpson revealed to RNZ that the role was shared by the dog along with three of his offspring.
“You only have to do one look at him on screen, and everyone agrees that he’s a potential movie star,” Simpson said. “He had that face that just captivated an audience, so a lot of the things emitting emotion from the dog, from the twist of the head, from the lick of the chops, all those close-ups, it’s all Uber.”
“[He’s] a very special dog, I knew as soon as I saw him. He was mature… he was six-years-old, he had an old soul inside him, looked like he lived a few past lives. He was very gentle, very calm, very grounded and he just had Odin written all over him,” Simpson added.
Uber was the father to 10 litters and they chose three of his offspring to share the role as they all look alike.
Uber was a police dog before starring in the movie
Uber was in police academy for two years, but failed.
“I think he was just too nice a dog to be a police dog,” Simpson told RNZ. “He also spent some time down in Queenstown. He was a companion for a paramedic who worked in the rescue helicopters.”
A team of 12 people cared for the dogs on set
“There was myself, four trainers, we had make-up artists, we had prosthetic department, we had a costume department… you name it, we had it… they even had their own trailers on set,” Simpson told RNZ.
The team had to ensure continuity whenever the dogs would be switched out for scenes.
“Throughout the whole movie, the dog wears a military vest which gets broken down over the course of the film. He has a bandana, he has a collar, he has a prosthetic leg on his front leg. So all these things have to be maintained, have to be broken down, have to be coloured, have to be fixed,” Simpson added.
