Nick Reiner is pursuing funds he believes are owed to him.
The son of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner has filed a petition to access the million-dollar trust fund his parents set up for him to help cover legal costs as he remains in custody for the charges of their murders, for which he has pleaded not guilty.Â
In documents filed June 8 and obtained by E! News, the 32-year-old requested a portion of his trust be given to him, claiming his parents left âunambiguous instructionsâ that part of the fund was to be paid out to him once he turned 30.Â
âNick loved his parents, and he is devastated by their deaths,â the petition reads. âBut the facts about what did and did not happen to them are not at issue in this Trust litigation. Like anyone accused of a crime, Nick is presumed innocent, and he is entitled to mount his defense with the resources that are lawfully his own.â
The trust petition estimates âmore than $1.5 millionâ is available to Nick in assets, part of which was supposed to be paid out when he turned 30 with access to the rest of the money granted to him when he turned 35. Elsewhere, the petition alleges that the attorney overseeing his trust, Paul R. Kanin, has given a âshifting series of excuses and justificationsâ to deny him the money and requested that the entirety of his trust be paid out to him now for legal fees and funding his commissary account.
E! News has reached out to Kanin but has not yet heard back.
Elsewhere in the filing, Nickâs legal team notes that his former attorney Alan Jackson had left the case because Nickâs trustee was not able to pay him. While the Being Charlie writerâs familyâincluding siblings Jake Reiner, 35, and Romy Reiner, 28âhad initially agreed to pay for Jackson, âthe anticipating funding did not materializeâ and the attorney withdrew from the case.
The attorney added a declaration in the filing, however, that notes his firm was âready willing and ableâ to represent Nick if the funds are made available.
Originally, Jackson did not share the reason he left Nickâs case at the time of his January withdrawal.
âMy teamâme personally and my teamâremain completely and utterly committed to Nick's best interest,â the criminal defense lawyerâwho has previously represented Kevin Spacey, Harvey Weinstein and Karen Readâsaid during an appearance on Letâs Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa in January. âWe always will be committed to his best interests. I want nothing but the best for him and I want him to get the most robust defense that he possibly can get.â
Despite his withdrawal, Jackson has maintained that his former client is not guilty of murder.Â
After Jacksonâs departure from the case, Nickâs family told E! News in a statement that they âhave the utmost trust in the legal process and will not comment further on matters related to the legal proceedings.â
