There is more Olive Smith and Adam Carlsen in our future, Ali Hazelwood, author of bestseller The Love Hypothesis, announced Tuesday that she is releasing a book sequel, titled The Two-Body Problem, in February. Additionally, MRC is developing a film for Amazon MGM Studios, based on the sequel, she revealed.

“I wrote a sequel to The Love Hypothesis” is not a sentence I thought I’d say a year or so ago, but now I weirdly can’t imagine a world in which The Two-Body Problem doesn’t exist,” Hazelwood wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of the book cover. “I’m really eager to talk more about this book and how it came about in the next few months. For now let me just say that the TLH movie and its cast made me fall for Adam and Olive all over again, that revisiting them was an absolute pleasure.”

She continued, “As someone who gets VERY attached to stories and characters, I know that unannounced sequels can be blindsiding, so feel free to skip this book and overwrite it with whatever headcanon you prefer, and I’ll see you on the next one! But if you want to read more about Adam and Olive, The Two-Body Problem spans a couple of years, and it’s a mix of slice of life, postdoctoral turmoil, and unflinching exploration of the hardest challenge one will face in a long-term relationship: deciding what to have for dinner.”

Saying “nothing is guaranteed,“ Hazelwood also announced, “MRC is developing a film based on the The Two-Body Problem for Amazon MGM Studios.“

Based on Hazelwood’s bestselling novel, The Love Hypothesis, which premiered September 23 on Prime Video, follows Olive (Lili Reinhart), a brilliant Ph.D. candidate focused on her future in academia, but an impulsive kiss with the intimidating professor Adam Carlsen (Tom Bateman) in front of her best friend changes the trajectory of her time at Stanford University.

There is some sort of tension after Olive hastily kisses Carlsen, who grabs her key-in badge to learn her name.What begins as a desperate act of to prove she’s moved on spirals into a fake relationship for Olive with rules, boundaries, and a mutually beneficial agreement. When the arrangement she has with her senior colleague begins to blur the lines between performance and reality, Olive is forced to test her most daunting hypothesis yet: that love might actually be worth the risk.

The Two-Body Problem book will be published on Feb. 2, 2027.
