EXCLUSIVE: Sony’s Screen Gems and Spyglass are developing a reimagining of the Japanese horror film Pulse, with Dave Boyle attached to direct, Deadline has learned.
The news comes just ahead of the unveiling of Boyle’s Never After Dark, a supernatural horror film that Magnolia Pictures releases in the U.S. on September 25.
Boyle is also set for a pass on a script by Luke Piotrowski. Parker Finn and Jonathan Fass are set to produce for Bad Feeling — the company behind Finn’s Smile films and upcoming Paramount remake the 1981 horror film Possession — alongside Spyglass.
Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Pulse premiered to critical acclaim in the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes in 2001. The film is a techno-horror about a group of young people in Tokyo who begin to experience strange phenomena involving missing co-workers and friends, technological breakdown, and a mysterious website.
Plot details for the new film are being kept under wraps. All that’s known is that it’s set in the modern era, revolving around a new set of characters.
Boyle wrote and directed Never After Dark, which won the Midnighter Audience Award in its premiere at this year’s SXSW Film Festival. His hiring for Pulse tracks, as he’s long told stories either set in Japan or revolving around Japanese or Japanese-American characters — House of Ninjas and Tokyo Cowboy being just two examples. He is repped by Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis.
