Michael is not only Lionsgate’s highest-grossing movie in history, but is now just $11 million shy of surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody as the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time.
The record-smashing Michael Jackson biopic Michael just crossed another threshold with $900 million at the worldwide box office. That places the film at just $11 million behind Bohemian Rhapsody; once Michael surpasses it, it will become the highest-grossing musical biopic in history.
Michael has well exceeded $544.8 million internationally, with Universal distributing the film overseas (with the exception of Japan and Russia). The film also has an impressive domestic total of over $355.2 million (distributed by Lionsgate).
In its seventh week of release, Michael’s highest-grossing territories include many in which the film has already surpassed Bohemian Rhapsody. In order by top-grossing territories, that includes the UK ($68 million), France ($54.3 million), Germany (34.4 million), Brazil ($32.2 million), Mexico ($31.4 million), Australia ($30.7 million), Italy ($29.1 million), Spain ($26.1 million), Colombia ($14.3 million), Netherlands ($14 million), Korea ($11.2 million), China ($10.3 million), Russia ($10 million), UAE ($9.7 million), Peru ($9.6 million), India ($8.3 million), Switzerland ($8 million), and Belgium ($7.4 million).
The Antoine Fuqua-directed film was released for premium digital sale or rental on Tuesday, and will be available on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD disc starting July 14. The 4K Ultra HD combo pack will be available in four configurations: a standard wide release, a Lionsgate limited-exclusive collector’s edition with a 50-page photo book, an Amazon-exclusive Steelbook edition, and a Walmart-exclusive Steelbook edition.
To build up the hype, Lionsgate and Fandango have launched a promotional campaign with a special collector’s box being sent out to select influencers across the United States. The package is filled with Michael-themed merch, including an A4 promotional poster, a “Jaafar Jackson as Michael” t-shirt, a black and white letterman jacket branded with the film’s logo, a pair of white Michael socks, and the official soundtrack on vinyl. It even includes a branded popcorn container, a box of sweets, and a Fandango gift card to allow recipients to watch the film at home.
Fandango is also giving the public the opportunity to win one of these promo boxes through a special giveaway, which is limited only to residents of the U.S.
