Making the movie Furiosa was not an easy experience for Anya Taylor-Joy and she’s opening up about her differences with director George Miller while filming the project.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga starred Anya as the title character, a younger version of Charlize Theron‘s role from Mad Max: Fury Road.

Anya was cast in the film in 2020 and production took place in Australia from June to October 2022. When the movie was released in 2024, Anya discussed the difficult experience on set, but didn’t want to say too much.

“I’ve never been more alone than making that movie. I don’t want to go too deep into it, but everything that I thought was going to be easy was hard,” she told The New York Times back then. When asked to reveal more, she said, “Next question, sorry. Talk to me in 20 years.”

Well, Anya is sharing more now.

Anya opened up for a new THR cover story, in which she discussed working with Miller.

She said that one piece of direction that Miller gave her while filming was, “Don’t breathe. Close your mouth. Show no emotion.”

Anya and George had creative differences on the project. She wanted a different ending for the character than he did, but she got the one she wanted in the end.

“It’s a very difficult conversation to have. If I were to be completely honest about my experience, it would hurt nobody but myself,” she said. “I just advocated and advocated and advocated for her to live up to her name. That was my mountain on that movie, and I got it, but it was hard, hard won.”

Anya is currently promoting a new Apple TV series that is coming soon.
