The Shards actors Homer Gere and Kaia Gerber have an interesting connection that could have made working together very awkward, but they thankfully navigated it all perfectly.

For those who don’t know, Homer and Kaia both have famous parents… who used to be married.

Homer is the 26-yeer-old son of Richard Gere and Carey Lowell while Kaia is the 24-year-old daughter of Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber.

Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford used to be married!

Did you know that Richard and Cindy were previously married? The former couple tied the knot in a Las Vegas ceremony in 1991 when she was 22 and he was 37. They got divorced four years later.

Cindy has admitted that their age gap caused issues in their relationship.

“I think a lot of what happened with Richard and I was that I was still 22 and at 22 — as a young woman — I was kind of still figuring out who I was and what I wanted to be and he was already 37. So in some ways, he knew that I was still growing and changing. I just didn’t want to hear it from him because at 22 you think you know everything. You think you’re already formed. And then you realize, 10 years later, that they were totally right,” she said back in 2013.

Ryan Murphy cleared the casting with the families

After realizing that Kaia and Homer were the right people for the roles of Susan and Robert in The Shards, he made sure everyone was comfortable with the casting.

“I think that was a private meeting with Kaia and Homer,” Ryan told THR about addressing the situation.

“I’m friends with Richard Gere and I’m really good friends with Cindy Crawford. Homer was someone who auditioned and walked in the room, and everyone was kind of blown away by his presence and what he could do as an actor. So when we got time to make offers, I talked to Kaia and Homer about: ‘Are you all cool with this? Because the media is certainly going to write about it,'” he added.

While Kaia was given a straight offer for her role, Homer auditioned for it and went through the full process.

“That’s not why Homer got the part. It was because he was always the best actor for that role. He auditioned many times. If at any point along the way Homer or Kaia or their parents said, ‘I’m not cool with that,’ then I would not have done it. I tried to be respectful and they were all very gracious about it. Everybody was wonderfully adult and open and responsible,” Ryan said.

Two other actors didn’t have to audition for their roles either.
