Easy fixes for facial volume loss have taken over social media as the use of GLP-1 medications has surged. But how many of those viral solutions actually work?
To separate fact from fiction, we asked Dr. Gina Maccarone, a triple board-certified cosmetic surgeon and founder of The Surgeonista, to explain what really causes facial volume loss as our bodies change and as we age, plus the treatments and habits that can help support collagen, elasticity, firmness, and overall skin texture.
According to Dr. Maccarone, facial volume loss is a natural part of aging that goes far beyond fine lines and wrinkles. "While many people think aging is primarily about wrinkles, we also gradually lose facial fat, collagen, elastin, and even some of the underlying bone support that gives the face its structure," Dr. Maccarone said.
"Weight loss, genetics, sun exposure, and lifestyle factors can all contribute, often making these changes more noticeable." Those changes often happen so gradually that they can be difficult to recognize in the moment.
"Most people don't notice volume loss right away," she explained. "They simply feel like they look more tired or less like themselves. Early changes often include flatter cheeks, hollowness around the eyes or temples, softening along the jawline, and shadows that weren't there before. These changes happen gradually, which is why many patients notice them only after looking at older photos."
"The biggest thing I wish people understood is that skincare and facial volume address two different issues: Skincare can improve the quality of the skin, but if the underlying concern is the loss of fat or structural support, no cream or serum can restore those deeper tissues," she explained.
"Understanding that distinction can save patients from spending money on products that simply aren't designed to solve the problem they're trying to treat."
"While skincare can't restore volume, it can improve the quality of the skin itself. Ingredients like retinoids, vitamin C, peptides, and growth factors can help support collagen production and improve firmness over time," she shared. "Daily sunscreen is equally important because protecting existing collagen is one of the best long-term investments you can make for your skin."
A combination of several types of peptides deeply penetrate the skin to support the skin barrier and increase collagen production, resulting in plumper, firmer skin.

"LED light therapy has some of the strongest evidence among at-home devices for reducing inflammation and supporting collagen production, making it a reasonable addition to many skincare routines," Dr.Maccarone shared.
"Microcurrent devices may provide temporary improvements in muscle tone, but they require ongoing use to maintain results. I would be more cautious about expecting significant lifting or volume restoration from any at-home device."

"Many of the same habits that support overall health also support healthy skin. Daily sunscreen, avoiding smoking, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, managing stress, and getting adequate sleep all help preserve collagen and improve skin quality over time. While we can't stop aging, we can certainly influence how well our skin ages," she said.

"If you're noticing increasing hollowness, sagging, or changes in your facial contours, it's worth seeing a board-certified cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist for an evaluation. The goal isn't necessarily to pursue treatment. It's to understand what's causing the changes so you can make informed decisions based on your anatomy and long-term goals," she concluded.
