Madonna is ready to confess again.

The 67-year-old Queen of Pop is releasing her album Confessions II on Friday (July 3), and one song – “One Step Away” – is getting a ton of attention for the way she recorded the track.

“It came from my soul…it’s kind of like I get possessed. It’s weird, the ideas come when I don’t try too hard. I thought, ‘Let me put a scratch vocal down, we won’t be too pressed about it,’ and it just happened,” she explained in an interview with Graham Norton alongside producer Stuart Price.

Stuart then revealed to Graham that the lyrics were written “in a flash of light” as he played the instrumental at the end of a session.

“‘Just switch on the microphone, I think I’ve got an idea,'” Madonna said to Stuart, he explained.

“That whole vocal performance comes out in one stream of consciousness. The lyrics, the melody, the whole thing happens in a moment.”

Fans got to hear part of “One Step Away” early as part of Confession II – The Film, a celeb-filled introduction to the record that premiered at the 2026 Tribeca Film Festival.

People think that dance music is superficial, but they’ve got it all wrong. The dance floor is not just a place, it’s a threshold: A ritualistic space where movement replaces language,” Madonna announces as the song begins.

One step?away from your freedom / One breath away from the dance of life / One step away from your heartbeat / One step away, yeah, you’re one step away.
